Sunbirds Can't Hold Off Penguins

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno Pacific's Spencer Krannitz scored a game-high 30 points, but the Sunbirds couldn't hold off a late charge from Dominican to fall 88-86 in PacWest action at the Special Events Center.

FPU drops its fourth straight game and moves to 4-17 overall and 4-10 in league play. The Penguins improve to 7-14 overall and 6-9 in the PacWest with the win.

Krannitz made 13-of-21 shots, including 4-of-7 from deep, for his second 30 point game of the season and added six steals. Kavika Jimenez poured in 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Sunbirds, while Mike Crawley chipped in with 10 points and nine rebounds and T.J. Viney added 10 points and six assists.

The Sunbirds led by as many as 16 in the first half to enter the locker room up 45-36. The Penguins continued to chip away throughout the second half and eventually evened the game at 75 with 4:43 to play. FPU answered behind a three from Krannitz a minute later, and extended its lead back to six, 82-76, with a pair of free-throws from Crawley with 1:26 remaining.

DUC answered with a 6-2 run, however, to tie the game at 86 with nine seconds left. After a timeout, the Sunbirds found themselves at the free-throw line again with five seconds left but couldn't capitalize on either attempt. After a scramble on the second missed attempt from the charity stripe, FPU was hit with a foul sending the Penguins to the line where they grabbed their first lead of the night with two seconds to play. A last second heave from R.J. Horn near half court missed wide as the buzzer sounded to make the game final.

The Sunbirds held at least a share of the lead for 39:58 and didn't connect on a field goal the last 2:39 of the game. The Sunbirds finished the evening at 50 percent from the floor, including a 43 percent clip from deep. DUC countered at 49 percent.

Reverend Maduakor led the Penguins with 22 points, while Jeremiah Gray added 19 points and two blocks.

The Sunbirds travel to Hawaii next week for three games, the first coming at Hawaii Hilo on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 9 p.m. PST.
