BELMONT, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific University men's soccer team earned a 3-2 PacWest Conference win on Thursday afternoon, defeating Notre Dame de Namur on the road. With the victory, the Sunbirds now stand at 3-3-1 overall, including a 2-1-0 mark in league action.
"This is a difficult to place to play, and we made a mistake early, but we were able to live with it. Today was a very important win for us," head coach
Jaime Ramirez said. "We had to recognize that we were still in the fight after we went down, but we made adjustments tactically.
I want to get out of our guys what I know they have in them, and if they are willing to battle, we can give ourselves a chance to win games."
The Argonauts started the scoring early when Robert Hines found the back of the net just ten minutes into the game. FPU tightened up the defensive effort and trailed just 1-0 heading into the locker room at halftime.
Sergio Segura put the Blue and Orange on the scoreboard less than four minutes into the second half with a shot from the top of the box over the head of NDNU keeper Alex Clewis. After leading scorer Esteban Berumen put the Argos back in front in the 73rd minute, FPU's
Victor Rodriguez provided the equalizer with just 13 minutes remaining in the game.
Joey Belzil almost earned the game-winner, but Clewis made the save to give
Jorge Chedraui a shot at the rebound. Chedraui took advantage and connected on the second effort to give the Birds their first and only lead of the day.
Fresno Pacific is set to return to action on Saturday, when they take on Dixie State in another PacWest showdown. Opening whistle from St. George, Utah is slated for 4:30 p.m. PST.
