Sunbirds Fall 2-1 to Cougars, Turn Attention to Pacwest Action

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific University women's soccer team dropped its final non-conference match of the year on Saturday, falling 2-1 to Cal State San Marcos. The Sunbirds drop to 2-2-0 on the year, while the Cougars remain unbeaten at 2-0-3.

"This team was very good at being physical and aggressive and disrupting our game," head coach Rob Podeyn said. "We were never able to adjust to their style and get into our rhythm."

After a scoreless first half, the Cougars got on the board first with a header from Amy Wilson in the 53rd minute. Mariah Montoya gave FPU the equalizer 95 seconds later after collecting the ball at midfield and beating two defenders on a breakaway. A late foul in the box allowed Elizabeth Maass a successful penalty kick to lift the Cougars to their second win.

Fresno Pacific returns to action on Wednesday, when they are set to host Chaminade in the PacWest Conference opener. Opening whistle from Ramirez Field is set for 7:30 p.m.

"We will spend this week getting focused on our game," Podeyn said. "We are looking forward to starting strong in our quest to finish in the top three in our conference."
