Scott Runs Hitting Streak to 22 Games as FPU Splits Action with UHH

Fresno Pacific and Hawaii Hilo split a PacWest doubleheader on Thursday to open a four-game series at FPU Diamond. The Sunbirds defeated the Vulcans 8-1 in the opener behind a stellar outing from Jake Martinez on the mound before dropping the nightcap 13-4.

FPU moves to 11-16 overall and 6-7 in the PacWest with the day split. UHH snapped its eight-game losing streak with the win in game two and now sits at 4-15 overall and 3-13 in league action.

Preston Scott led the Sunbirds offensively on the day with three hits and four RBI, while Leo Carrillo picked up four knocks and scored two runs. Scott improved his hitting streak to 22 games with hits in each game.

Martinez was the difference in the opener for the Sunbirds, as the senior went 8.0 innings on the mound and allowed one earned run. He struck out five en route to his third win of the season.

Scott backed Martinez with a 2-for-4, three RBI performance that included a two-run home run in the sixth inning to put the Sunbirds up 3-0. FPU went on to score five times in the eighth after UHH plated a run in the top half.

Derek Arkelian and Angel Flores both added two hits and an RBI in the win for the Sunbirds.

FPU then surrendered 16 free passes in the nightcap to fall to the Vulcans 13-4.

Josh Medeles was tagged with the loss for the Sunbirds after throwing 3.2 innings and allowing five runs. The bullpen allowed 14 runners to reach base by walk or hit-by pitch.

After the Vulcans scored in the opening frame, Scott answered for the Sunbirds with an RBI triple. Nick Pate added an RBI double and then stole home to put FPU up 3-1 after the first. The Vulcans, however, added 11 runs in the final six innings to grab the win.

Scott finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while Carrillo added two hits and a run.

UHH's Jordan Kurokawa earned the win with seven strikeouts in seven innings, while Michael Jenkerson added three hits and four RBI.

The series wraps up tomorrow at FPU Diamond with a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
