FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno Pacific was held to a season low in points on Saturday as the Sunbirds fell to PacWest leader Concordia, 69-63, at the FPU Events Center.
FPU falls to 12-10 overall and 7-8 in the PacWest with the setback, while CUI moves to 21-3 overall and 14-2 in league action.
"All the things we do well, like shoot the three ball and make our free-throws, we didn't do tonight," said head coach
Tim Kisner. "Tonight was a by-product of having to play too many guys too many minutes. I thought our defensive effort was solid, however, and I thought we competed. Concordia is a very good basketball team, give them credit."
Concordia, who entered the night as the conference leader in scoring defense, limited the Sunbirds to a season-low 37 percent from the field and 20 percent from the three-point line. CUI held FPU's
Spencer Krannitz and
Gabe Solarin to 1-of-15 from three.
Madison Higgins led the Sunbirds with 26 points and six rebounds, while
T.J. Viney finished with 10 points and five assists. Krannitz added seven rebounds, five assists and five rebounds, while
Zach Bartley amassed eight points and eight rebounds.
CUI jumped out to an early lead in the first half following a 19-0 run that gave the Eagles their largest lead of the night of 16 points, 23-7, with 9:27 to play in the first half. The Sunbirds chipped away at the lead the rest of the night and cut it to four, 48-44, with 9:35 left. FPU wouldn't come any closer, however, as the Eagles responded to each run the Sunbirds managed down the stretch.
The Sunbirds were out-rebounded 45-37 and allowed 16 offensive rebounds. The Eagles turned the offensive glass advantage into 15 second-chance points.
Concordia was led by JT Roach's double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds.
FPU is back in action at home on Wednesday, Feb. 10 against Holy Names.
