FRESNO, Calif. - Zach Bartley recorded a double-double and
Madison Higgins scored 32 points as Fresno Pacific defeated Holy Names, 97-91, Wednesday night at the FPU Events Center. The Sunbirds shot a season-best 61.3 percent to complete the sweep of the Hawks in PacWest play.
FPU moves to 13-10 overall and 8-8 in the PacWest with the win, while HNU falls to 4-21 overall and 3-14 in league action.
"Madison got off to a great start and really carried that momentum throughout the game," said head coach
Tim Kisner. "Zach was excellent tonight as well inside, which was a huge key. He played with great effort and played hard. Our upperclassmen did a great job of helping us find a way to get it done tonight."
Higgins made 9-of-14 shots, including 12-of-13 from the free-throw line, for a career best 32 points, while Bartley added his first double-double of the season with 16 points (8-12 FG) and 12 rebounds, both of which are career highs.
Spencer Krannitz added 16 points (6-10 FG) and seven assists,
Gabe Solarin scored 12 points and
T.J. Viney finished with eight points and five assists for FPU.
The Sunbirds used a 17-7 run in the middle of the opening period to jump out to a 14-point lead, 32-18. FPU lead by as many as 17 in the half and held a 52-38 advantage at the intermission.
The Sunbirds opened the second half with a 6-0 run to earn their largest lead of the night of 20 points following a three from Krannitz and a jumper and a free throw from Higgins. The Hawks followed with a run of their own, however, and jumped back in the game with a 9-2 stretch. A three from HNU's Blake Watkins cut the lead to 72-71 with 6:11 to play, but the Hawks couldn't get any closer the rest of the way. A Bartley layup put the Sunbirds up seven with under two minutes to play before Higgins finished off the win with free throws.
"I thought we played great for 22 minutes," noted Kisner. "Holy Names made some shots and made it tough on us, but our guys hung in there and found a way. At this point in the year it's all about getting a win, but we do have some things we need to correct as we move forward."
FPU out-rebounded HNU 40-25 on the night and scored 16 second-chance points. The Sunbirds added 48 points in the paint and 22 fast-break points. HNU forced 22 turnovers and scored 26 points off turnovers to stay in the game.
Dante Robinson led the Hawks with 22 points and eight rebounds.
FPU is back in action on Saturday at Dixie State in Utah at 6:30 p.m. PT.
