Bullpen falters in 9th as Sunbirds fall 11-7

Fresno Pacific had a two-run lead heading into the ninth but surrendered six runs in the final inning to fall 11-7 to Stanislaus State in a game that decided the season series between the two teams.

The Sunbirds (5-4) scored three runs in the eighth inning to take a 7-6 lead but couldn't find the strike zone in the ninth, allowing the Warriors back in it. The FPU bullpen issued nine walks over the final two innings, including six in the final frame by four different pitchers.

FPU had walked in a run in the top of the eighth inning to give CSUS a 5-4 lead but the Sunbirds responded in the bottom half, capitalizing on a couple Warrior miscues that made it 6-5 before freshman Angel Flores delivered his first collegiate hit, an RBI single to center to make it 7-5.

Kevin Magill took the loss for the Sunbirds, giving up three earned, one of four pitchers to take the mound in the ninth. Starter Gene Cachu pitched into the sixth inning and was fairly effective, giving up six hits and two earned runs while striking out three and walking one in 5 1/3 innings of work. The five relievers that followed him however all surrendered at least one run.

Preston Scott finished 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI to lead the Sunbirds. McKay France went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Davy Vartanian finished 1-for-5 with two RBI.

Charlie Gaff went 3-for-5 with two RBI to lead the Warriors (6-2). Garrett Serino delivered a three-RBI double in the ninth that made it 11-7.

It was FPU's first home loss of the season.

The Sunbirds now travel to the Bay Area to take on Cal State East Bay for a four-game series beginning Thursday at 2 pm.
