SCHEDULE NOTES
After this week, FPU hosts Hawaii Hilo on Nov. 3 and will celebrate Senior Day on Nov. 5 against Hawaii Pacific to wrap up the regular season.
PACWEST STANDINGS
As of October 25, Fresno Pacific currently sits in seventh place in the
PacWest Conference standings. California Baptist is fourth, one slot ahead of Concordia.
ABOUT FRESNO PACIFIC (7-5-1, 5-3-1)
The Sunbirds went 2-0-0 last week, as nine different Sunbirds found the back of the net en route to defeats of Academy of Art and Holy Names. FPU delivered back-to-back clean sheets for the second time this season while snapping a three-game scoring drought.
Rachelle Schiller was named the PacWest Conference Player of the Week after a goal and two assists last week, becoming the second Sunbird to win the award this season, following the selection of
Amber Rodriguez on Sept. 26.
ABOUT CALIFORNIA BAPTIST (7-4-3, 6-1-2)
The Lancers enter this week with a four-game winning streak on the line, including back-to-back shutouts of Notre Dame de Namur and Dominican last week. Justene Kesterson and Desarae Felix each scored in Saturday's win over the Penguins, with Kesterson's fifth goal of the year leading the team. Sara Escobedo has recorded 63 saves between the posts this season, allowing just 13 shots to hit the net.
SERIES HISTORY: SUNBIRDS VS LANCERS
The Sunbirds have struggled historically against CBU, claiming a 3-12-1 record in the all-time series. The two teams played to a 1-1 tie last season, and the Lancers took the last meeting in Riverside (2014) by a final of 3-1.
ABOUT CONCORDIA (9-1-4, 5-1-3)
Concordia went 1-1-0 last week, falling 2-1 to Dominican on Thursday before bouncing back with a 1-0 victory over Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday. Brianna Meyer came away with the game-winner against the Argos, while Natalie Werner and McKenna Carrillo share the team lead in scores. Jazmin Alvarez has posted one of the best saves/goals allowed ratios in the PacWest Conference this fall, surrendering only eight and saving 54.
SERIES HISTORY: SUNBIRDS VS EAGLES
The Sunbirds are 1-10-1 all-time against Concordia, with the only series victory coming last season in Fresno. After a scoreless first half,
Sassy Weigant scored on a corner kick from
Amber Rodriguez in the 53rd minute to give the Blue and Orange their first ever win over the Eagles.
HEAD COACH ROB PODEYN
Rob Podeyn joined the FPU staff in 2015 as head women's soccer coach. In his first season with the team, he guided a team that had finished 6-8-2 the previous year to a record-breaking season that saw the team lead the league in shots on goal while tying for the best record in program history.
Podeyn began his coaching career after a successful seven-year professional playing career as a goalkeeper. He played collegiately at Long Island-C.W. Post (1984-1987) where he was an NCAA Division II All-American while leading his team to the NCAA quarterfinals as a senior. That year, Podeyn led the nation in save percentage (.893) and ranked fifth in the nation in saves with 107. He went on to spend seven seasons with the Long Island Stars of the American Soccer League, earning league MVP honors twice while setting a league record of 973 consecutive shutout minutes.
He holds an overall career coaching record of 109-98-20, including a 9-6-2 mark in his first season at FPU. He holds a bachelor's degree in English from Dowling College and a master's of education from William Woods University. Podeyn teaches in the university's kinesiology department, focusing primarily on the areas of sport psychology and leadership.
