Shots Fired! FPU Takes 41 to Soar Past Hawks 5-0

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific University women's soccer team earned a 5-0 victory on Saturday night, besting Holy Names University in PacWest Conference action. With the win, the Sunbirds improve to 7-5-1, including a 5-3-1 mark in league play.

In two games this week, the Sunbirds have now outscored their opponents 9-0, outshooting their guest 68-13 in that time.

"We really tried to get back to our style of play and wanted to be dynamic in our attack, and I felt good about that," head coach Rob Podeyn said. "With the offensive mindset we're trying to build, I hope this will carry over."

Amber Rodriguez started the scoring in the 19th minute with a chip over the goalie from the left side of the box. Fresno Pacific carried a 1-0 lead into the intermission, but the offensive onslaught was just beginning.

Mikala Alaman took advantage of a second chance effort to push the Sunbird lead to 2-0 just ten minutes into the second half. The Sunbirds refused to let the foot off the gas, as Hannah Strong and Paige Jano each found the net within two minutes of one another, pushing the home team to a convincing 4-0 lead.

After Kylie Campama's shot was deflected in the 90th minute, Rachel Anderson added the final score in FPU's flurry of goals. The Blue and Orange finished the night with a season-high in goals as well on shots (41), while Alaman, Strong, and Jano each recorded their first career score.
FPU is set to make the final road trip of the year next week, a two-game trip beginning against California Baptist. Opening whistle from Riverside is set for Thursday at 3:00 p.m.

"Those are two rivals for us," Podeyn said. "If we're serious about trying to finish in the top three in our conference, that includes being strong next week."
