Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Sunbirds Stumble in Azusa, Fall 1-0 to Cougars

AZUSA, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific University women's soccer team was tripped up on Thursday night, finishing the night on the wrong end of a 1-0 shutout against Azusa Pacific. The Sunbirds now claim a 5-4-1 record on the season, including a 3-2-1 mark in PacWest Conference contests.

"We had a call that didn't go our way, and their goal held up. In every other way, we outplayed them tonight," head coach Rob Podeyn said. "We're still improving as a team, but we are very proud of where we are."

APU forward Hayley Williamson provided all the offense on Thursday, sneaking a shot just under the crossbar from the top of the box in the game's 27th minute. The Cougars have now won five straight at their home facility, allowing just one goal in that span.

While Fresno Pacific outshot their hosts 12-10, the Cougars were more selective, outdueling the Birds 6-3 in shots on frame. Corner kicks were even at four apiece, while FPU's Summer Hammond tallied five of the game's eight recorded saves.

The Sunbirds return to action on Saturday, when they head to San Diego to take on Point Loma. Opening whistle is set for 2:00 p.m.

"We're dealing with a team that's been to the national tournament the last two years and has been atop our conference for the last four," Podeyn said. "They are a different style than Azusa, but they are the same caliber. It will be a good battle, and we are hoping to come away with the win."
