Sunbirds Run Into Hot-Shooting Silverswords

HONOLULU - Fresno Pacific ran into a hot-shooting Chaminade team on Saturday, as the Sunbirds fell 114-91 in PacWest play. Gabe Solarin scored 22 points to lead FPU in the setback.

The Sunbirds move to 9-7 overall and 4-5 in the PacWest following the loss, while CUH improves to 6-9 overall and 4-4 in league action.

Solarin nailed five threes en route to his team-high 22 points, while Spencer Krannitz added 17 points, on 5-of-10 shooting, and four assists for FPU. Roger Paul scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds, Madison Higgins tallied nine points and three assists, Tyrone Viney Jr. scored nine points, grabbed six rebounds and tallied three assists, and Jeff Bartley scored six points and amassed four rebounds as well.

Chaminade came out on fire in the first half, shooting 65 percent from the floor in the period, to lead 63-49 at the intermission. The Sunbirds led 17-13 early before CUI fought back to take a 40-30 advantage at the under eight media timeout. The Swords then used a 20-11 run the next six minutes to earn their largest lead of the half, 60-41.

FPU continued to chip away at the lead in the second half, coming within seven at the 16:05 mark, before CUH increased its lead back to 11 with 7:39 left. The Sunbirds wouldn't come any closer the rest of the way as the 'Swords snapped their three-game losing streak.

For the game, the Silverswords shot 53 percent from the floor and made 14 threes at a 44 percent clip from deep. The Sunbirds were held to 39 percent from the field and 36 percent from three. FPU also shot a season-low 65 percent from the free-throw line.

FPU was out-rebounded 51-36 and out-scored 40-22 in the paint. Chaminade also benefitted from 52 points off the bench.

Rohndell Goodwin led the 'Swords with 28 points and 15 rebounds, while Kuany Kuany amassed 16 points, 11 rebounds and four assists.

"We didn't compete at the level needed to win games in this league tonight," said head coach Tim Kisner. "I didn't have the guys ready to play. We will learn our lesson and be ready to go on Monday."
