FRESNO, Calif. - Baron Bower and
Preston Scott homered while
Jake Martinez and
Eian Raeber put together quality starts as FPU completed a three-game sweep of Cal State East Bay with two wins on Saturday. Scores from FPU Diamond were 4-3 in game one and 3-1 in game two.
The Sunbirds, ranked #5 in the West Region, improved to 18-8 on the season while the Pioneers fell to 7-16.
Martinez (4-1) struck out 10 over 7 2/3 innings of work to earn the win in game one. The junior allowed three earned runs, all of which crossed the plate in the second inning. He didn't allow a hit after a leadoff single in the top of the third and retired nine in a row at one point.
"I'm really proud of Jake," said head coach
Oscar Hirschkorn. "It's easy to perform when things are going well for you, but the tough guys are the ones who give you a good outing when things are going wrong. That's where toughness lies, and Jake was the definition of tough today."
The Sunbirds scored four unanswered runs to earn the victory, with two coming in the third and two in the sixth. Scott delivered an RBI groundout and
Steven Lozier scored on a passed ball in the third to cut the CSUEB lead to 3-2. In the sixth,
Michael Tittle opened the inning with a single through the left side and promptly stole second. After a Scott walk,
Michael Hostetler sacrificed the runners into scoring position with a bunt.
Travis Beck followed with a sacrifice fly to left to score Tittle before
Nick Pate drove in the go-ahead RBI with a single to right field.
Austin Tatum earned the save (1) for the Sunbirds. The sophomore relieved Martinez in the eighth with a runner on third and induced a foul out to end the threat.
Michael Tittle went 2-for-3, stole a base and scored a run for FPU. Scott, Beck and Pate tallied an RBI apiece.
In the series finale, Bower led off with a home run and Scott added a two-run shot later in the inning to give Raeber (1-2) all the support he would need.
Raeber surrendered just one run and three hits in six innings of work, and struck out four in his first win of the year.
Josh Medeles earned his first save with a clean seventh inning.
Pate finished 2-for-3 for the Sunbirds.
"It's always nice to sweep a series, but we need to be more consistent," said Hirschkorn. "We have to start stringing at-bats all the way through our order if we are going to compete in the way we feel we should. We are pitching really well, and now we just need to produce tough at-bats."
FPU jumps back into PacWest play with a four-game set at California Baptist next week. Game one is slated for Thursday, March 26 in Riverside at 6 p.m
