After three consecutive years of splitting the season series with Cal State Stanislaus, Fresno Pacific picked up a series win over the Warriors, splitting Saturday's doubleheader to take three out of four from CSUS.
Preston Scott went 2-for-5 with two RBI and delivered a walk-off single for FPU in a 6-5 game one win. The Sunbirds (4-1) would be done in by some costly errors in the second game, falling 6-5 in extra innings to the Warriors (3-3). FPU uncharacteristically totaled six errors on the day.
Drew Merlo got the start in game one and had a 3-0 lead to work with early on. The Sunbird lefty lasted five innings and struck out six, but ran into some trouble in the sixth inning and would be tagged with three earned runs.
Kyle Rasmussen gave the team stellar work out of the pen, throwing three scoreless innings and striking out five.
Tanner Irwin would pitch the ninth and earn the win after a Sunbird rally in the bottom half.
In the final frame,
McKay France was hit by a pitch,
Baron Bower walked and
Michael Hostetler walked to load the bases. Scott, needing just to hit the ball into the outfield for a sac fly, sent a ball over the centerfielder's head for the game-winning hit.
Bower finished 2-for-4 in the win and picked up where he left off in game two with a hit in the first inning before coming around to score on a double by Scott. FPU held a 2-1 lead, but things would go south in the fourth inning as the Warriors chased starter
Eian Raeber and picked up two extra runs on a costly throwing error that would have ended the inning. On the next play, Bower was injured in an outfield collision and would not return.
Trailing 5-2 with their leadoff hitter now out of the game, the Sunbirds showed tremendous resiliency as they staged a comeback.
Josh Medeles made it possible with four no-hit innings out of the bullpen to keep the Warriors at bay. In the bottom of the fifth, an RBI double by
Nick Pate that nearly cleared the wall and a two-RBI single by France tied it up at 5-5.
FPU had a golden opportunity in the bottom of the sixth with runners on first and third and one out, but after Scott popped up,
Michael Tittle was caught in a run down at third base as he looked to advance after the runner on first stole second. The Warriors would scrape a run off of Rasmussen in the eighth, who took the loss.
The loss snapped a 13-game win streak for FPU, dating back to last season.
The Sunbirds host West Region #1-ranked Chico State next weekend for a three-game series beginning Friday at 6 pm.
