Clayton posts double-double on Senior Night

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno Pacific surrendered a season-high 104 points to fall to visiting #24 California Baptist, 104-70, Thursday night in PacWest action. Trevon Clayton recorded his fifth straight double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds in the loss for the Sunbirds on Senior Night at the FPU Events Center.

FPU falls to 9-18 overall and 5-14 in the PacWest, while CBU improves to 21-5 overall and 15-4 in league play with the win.

"California Baptist had a lot to play for and it showed tonight," said head coach Shane Rinner. "Our guys battled and fought. We didn't shoot the ball very well, but Trev, Madison and Gabe continued to attack the hoop, which I was happy with. When you aren't hitting shots and you run into a very efficient team, it's hard to get a win, however."

FPU hung around early and trailed 28-27 with 7:29 left in the opening half. The Lancers followed with a 23-9 run to close the period and take a 51-36 lead into the intermission. CBU closed out the win with 53 second-half points, and led by as many as 36 points.

Madison Higgins scored a game-high 20 points for FPU, while Roger Paul totaled nine. Clayton finished 7-of-10 from the floor in his 12th double-double of the season. FPU was held to a season-low 31% from the floor.

CBU countered with a 65% clip, which included a 60% mark from three (15-for-25), and outscored FPU 50-20 in the paint. Michael Smith led the Lancers with 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting and dished out six assists.

The Sunbirds honored Drew Packard and Clayton prior to game for Senior Night in front of the home crowd.

"Drew is a great player to have and always gives his complete effort. His physicality and mindset is key to a successful team, both in practice and in games," said Rinner. "Trevon is another great athlete to have, both on and off the court. His ability to rebound the basketball and provide a multitude of things on the floor is special."

Clayton ranks fourth all-time in school history in career rebounds at 713, fifth all-time in career field goal percentage at 58% and seventh all-time in career blocked shots with 78.

FPU wraps up its season this weekend at Azusa Pacific at 3:00 p.m.
