Sunbirds conclude season with 99-77 setback to #12 Azusa Pacific

AZUSA, Calif. – Fresno Pacific concluded its season Saturday with a setback to #12 Azusa Pacific, 99-77, on the road in PacWest action. Trevon Clayton finished his career as a Sunbird with his sixth straight double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds at the Felix Event Center.

FPU finishes the 2014-15 campaign at 9-19 overall and 5-15 in the PacWest. APU moves to 24-4 overall and 17-3 in league play and clinched at least a share of the regular season conference title with the win.

"I'm really proud of how the guys battled the last three games against the top of the conference," said head coach Shane Rinner. "We came out and attacked them early and knocked down shots. Azusa Pacific started five seniors who were playing for a championship and they were going to be a tough out. I thought both of our seniors did a great job and played exceptionally well today."

The Sunbirds came out strong and scored the first seven points of the game, which included a game-opening three from senior Drew Packard. After each team exchanged baskets, APU used a 9-0 run with the game tied at 17 to earn control. The Cougars took a 44-38 lead into the locker room at the half.

FPU cut the Cougar lead to four, 59-55, after an Oliver Herting three at the 13:12 mark, but wouldn't come any closer. APU led by as many as 23 in the second half.

Clayton's 19 points were a team-high and he added six offensive boards to his total of 13. The Orlando, Florida native concluded the season with 13 double-doubles and was the only player to average the feat in the PacWest. Madison Higgins scored 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists for FPU, while Gabe Solarin added 13 points and four assists. Daveon Gibson was the final player in double figures with 10 and also dished out five assists.

The Sunbirds dished out 17 assists as a team and shot 45% from the floor. FPU nailed eight threes and made 13-of-18 free-throws.

APU countered with a 53% clip from the floor and outrebounded the Sunbirds 41-33. The Cougars added 58 points in the paint and scored 27 points off turnovers. Troy Leaf, the PacWest's leading scorer, led the attack with 21 points and five assists. Petar Kutlesic added 14 points and 14 rebounds for the Cougars.

The Sunbirds graduate Clayton and Packard, but return seven contributors next season. Clayton concluded his career fourth all-time in school history in career rebounds at 726, fifth all-time in career field goal percentage at 57% and seventh all-time in career blocked shots with 78.  His 291 total rebounds this season ranks sixth in FPU history.
