Jenay Herring and
Keairra White combined for 50 points as the Sunbirds defeated Dixie State 91-82 in an up-tempo PacWest shootout on Saturday. Herring poured in 27 points on 8-of-12 shooting, while White added 23 points and 11 rebounds. Both teams wore pink during warmups and all proceeds from the game went to the
Play 4 Kay Foundation.
The 91 points was season high as the Sunbirds (6-17, 6-12) shot 55 percent from the field and picked up their third straight win.
Jasmine Shedrick added 11 points for FPU and
Megan Lee had 10 points and eight rebounds. Herring added five assists and Shedrick finished with four blocks.
Taylor Mann had a game-high 34 points for the Red Storm (8-17, 7-12 PacWest).
"We did a lot of really good things offensively," said head coach
Lindsey Wilson. "The ball did not stay still often as we worked it around and exploited mismatches. They were a much bigger team and we were playing four guards for much of the game, but we played to our strengths and our girls did a great job defensively and on the boards as well. Keairra did a phenomenal job of just going and getting rebounds and outworking people. Her and Jenay have really stepped up. Both of them have done everything that we've asked and they're leading by example."
The game featured numerous lead changes in the first half before FPU took a 43-39 lead into the locker room. Herring was on fire in the first half, making her first six shots and totaling 16 at the break. A 12-2 run midway through the second half helped the Sunbirds distance themselves. DSU never got closer than six in the final minutes.
The Sunbirds are back in action on Thursday hosting Cal Baptist for senior night, the final home game for Herring and White.
Herring moved into fourth place on the program's all-time scoring list, passing both Dana Coates and Erica John who each played from 1991-94. Herring now has 1,476 career points and needs 18 to tie Maurecia Clark (2002-04) for third.
