Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Herring goes for career-high 33 on senior night

Jenay Herring scored a career-high 33 points on her senior night, moving into second all-time in career scoring at FPU. The Sunbirds played neck and neck with one of the PacWest's top teams, Cal Baptist, for the first half, going into halftime tied 54-54, but the Lancers shot 67 percent in the second half however to pull away for a 117-89 victory.

Fellow senior Keairra White added 16 points and six assists, eclipsing the 1,000 point milestone for her career. Dakota McLarnan finished with 17 points.

Herring passed former Sunbird Maurecia Clark (1,497 points) and former teammate Jessica Torrecillas (1,500 points) to move into second all-time. She now has 1,509 for her career. Herring also ranks in the top five in program history in assists, steals, free-throws and three-pointers, and in the Top 10 in school history in field goals made and free throw percentage.

"Jenay loves the game," said head coach Lindsey Wilson. "I've never had a player that spends as much time in the gym as she does. She wants to be as good as she can possibly be and that type of kid is a joy to coach no matter what level you're at. Her passion for the game is unmatched and we are really going to miss her presence on and off the court."

White came into the night needing five points to reach 1,000 for her career, a mark she reached early in the first half.

"Keairra's career here had a lot of ups and downs and I'm so proud of the way she's grown," said Wilson. "On the court she's become a terrific, well-rounded player. She's done a great job in the classroom and is just a great young woman to be around. The growth she's shown as a person has been incredible."

FPU shot 49% from the field, 67% from three-point range (12-of-18) and 91% from the line (19-of-21), but ultimately struggled too much on the defensive end and had 30 turnovers in the loss.

Courtney Nelson led the Lancers (22-5, 15-4 PacWest) with 26 points.

FPU fell to 6-18, 6-13 in PacWest play. The Sunbirds close out the season on Saturday at Azusa Pacific.
