SAN FRANCISCO - Trevon Clayton's double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds wasn't enough as Fresno Pacific fell to host Academy of Art 90-88 in overtime Wednesday night in PacWest action. The Sunbirds had a clean look from three at the buzzer, but
Jeff Amazan's trey rimmed out to give FPU its third straight loss.
The Sunbirds fall to 7-16 overall and 3-12 in conference with the loss, while ARTU moves to 6-15, 4-11.
FPU held a 44-37 lead at the intermission. The Urban Knights chipped away at the deficit in the second half until knotting it up at 58 all with 9:33 remaining. After a back-and-fourth nine minutes, the Sunbirds were down three with seven seconds second left. FPU was sent to the free-throw line after the Urban Knights fouled
Madison Higgins before an offensive set was established. Higgins nailed the front-end from the charity stripe and missed the second on purpose, which allowed the Sunbirds to retain possession of the ball after it was forced out of bounds on the rebound. Clayton answered with a layup with 0.3 seconds left to force the extra time.
Each team exchanged buckets in OT until the Urban Knights capitalized on two free-throws with six seconds remaining to go up 90-88.
Bobby Barnes scored a game-high 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting and pulled down seven rebounds. Higgins added 18 points (8-11 FG), five rebounds and five assists, while
Roger Paul was the final Sunbird in double figures with 13 points. Clayton's double-double marked his eighth of the season.
The Sunbirds shot 56% from the floor, which marked a season high. FPU out-rebounded the Urban Knights 37-33 and outscored ARTU 52-36 in the paint.Â
"The guys battled hard," said head coach
Shane Rinner. "We were able execute down the stretch to get the game into overtime. We gave ourselves a chance to win, but the 14 missed free-throws and the 19 turnovers were too much to overcome in the end."
FPU is now 0-3 on the season in overtime and have been outscored 30-18 in the extra time.
Alexis Moore led the Urban Knights with 19 points and seven assists.
FPU travels back to the Bay Area on Saturday to take on Notre Dame de Namur at 3:00 p.m.
