FRESNO, Calif. - Gabe Solarin scored a career-high 23 points as Fresno Pacific defeated Stanislaus State 92-84 on Saturday night at the FPU Events Center. The Sunbirds had four players in double-figures and shot 52 percent from the floor to record their highest scoring output of the season.
FPU improves to 3-1 overall on the young season with the win, while Stan State falls to 1-2 overall.
Solarin made 7-of-12 shots, four from three, for his 23 points and added four assists.
Roger Paul scored 18 points and
Kiree Hutchings and
Tyrone Viney Jr. finished with 11 points apiece. Viney Jr. added five assists.
Spencer Krannitz recorded eight points and five rebounds, while
Zach Bartley and
Tyler Shea provided a spark inside with six points apiece.
"We got off to a very sluggish start, which is always fearful as a coach," said head coach
Tim Kisner. "We were able to get a few stops and get out and run to get back in the game. We did a good job offensively the rest of the night and shared the ball well. We have a few things to clean up on the defensive end to continue to get better."
The Sunbirds used a 27-12 run to open the second half to earn its largest lead of the night, 68-50, and take control of the game with 11:27 to go. The run was fueled by Solarin, as the senior scored 12 points in a four-minute span that included two treys. FPU trailed 20-7 early in the first half before turning it on to lead 41-38 at the intermission.
"Gabe really got us going in the second half," noted Kisner about the run. "He willed us there for three or four minutes and that's what your seniors are supposed to do."
FPU scored 22 points off 18 Warrior turnovers and out-scored Stan State 32-23 in the paint. The Sunbirds received 43 points off the bench and made 18-of-21 free throws.
The Warriors received a game-high 26 points from Christian Bayne, while Alek Carlson added 20.
FPU continues non-conference action next week as they host Bristol on December 3 at 7 p.m.
