Fresno Pacific sent its senior class off in style on Thursday as the Sunbirds swept Academy of Art 26-24, 25-18 and 25-19 to pick up their eighth straight victory. FPU's two seniors,
Hannah Butler and
Morghan Williams, dominated the match in their final game in front of the home crowd.
Butler stopped the ARTU attack all night, posting a match-high 31 digs. The two-time PacWest Libero of the Year posted 17 digs in the first set alone and held the Urban Knights to a .129 attack percentage on the night.
Williams was the team's go-to hitter once again, posting a match-high 14 kills while hitting .306 to lead the offense.
Gabriela Macedo,
Montana Lowe and
Carley Bock each added 10 kills apiece. Macedo also had 14 digs in finish with a double-double.
Chelsea Speaks added 13 digs and
Bissie DenHartog facilated the attack with 43 assists and a match-high three service aces.
The Sunbirds trailed 24-20 in set one but after a Macedo kill, DenHartog delivered back-to-back service aces to cut the deficit to 24-23. DenHartog would serve the rest of the way as Williams came through with a solo block to tie it up and Macedo eventually delivered the set-winning kill. FPU was much more in control for the final two sets to complete the sweep.
The Urban Knights (9-18, 5-14 PacWest) saw a three-match winning streak snapped and dropped to 0-11 in away games this season.
Butler will graduate ranking second in the program's storied history in career digs, behind only Sunbird legend Tracy Ainger-Schulte. In 112 career matches she's totaled 2,308 digs, 158 assists and 114 service aces. Her career digs mark is a record for the rally-scoring era. She also holds the single-match record with 43, set last year in a win over Hawaii Hilo.
"Hannah is the latest, and in my opinion, the greatest in a long line of amazing liberos who have come through the Sunbird volleyball program," said head coach
Matt Terra. "An incredible competitor, Hannah has been the starting libero and the cornerstone for the FPU defense since her freshman year. Her work ethic in both practice and matches has set the tone for this team and will be not easily duplicated. A President's Scholar Athlete as well, Hannah's work ethic carries over from the volleyball court into the classroom."
Williams is also a four-year starter for the Sunbirds. In 109 career matches she's totaled 907 kills, 248 blocks and 114 digs.
"Morghan has been a staple of the Sunbird offense since her freshman year," said Terra. "She's been an amazingly versatile player who has played every front row position and had great success no matter where she's played. Morghan is the embodiment of what a Fresno Pacific volleyball player is all about: an amazing Christian leader, President's Scholar student and an unbelievable volleyball talent."
FPU finished its home schedule with a 9-1 record this year at the FPU Events Center. The Sunbirds conclude the 2015 season on Saturday as they travel to Utah to take on Dixie State. DSU, who defeated FPU in five sets in Fresno, has already clinched the PacWest title.
