ST. GEORGE, Utah - Fresno Pacific finished off the 2015 campaign in dramatic fashion, spoiling senior day at first-place Dixie State by fighting back from a 2-0 deficit to knock off the Red Storm 3-2. With the victory the Sunbirds put the finishing touches on a nine-match winning streak to end the year, finishing with an overall record of 13-12, 13-7 in PacWest play.
After dropping the first two sets 25-19 and 25-18, the Sunbirds stormed back behind a total team effort, beginning with an emphatic 25-10 win in set three. The Sunbirds then battled their way to a 25-19 win in set four, before hitting .409 in the decisive fifth set to win 15-9, closing it out on a 7-2 run.
"This is a really special group," said head coach
Matt Terra. "I couldn't be more proud of what they accomplished this season. Today was a complete team effort. Every single player stepped up and contributed to this win."
Morghan Williams continued what has been an absolutely dominant second half to the season, finishing with 17 kills and just two errors (.417) to lead the offense. The senior also added four blocks in her final match as a Sunbird.
"We were able to be very effective with our middles throughout this win streak," said Terra. "It all starts with ball control and passing. They really put in the time to become a better passing team. When we were in system and able to find Morghan, she was unstoppable."
Hannah Butler, playing in her final match as a senior, was far and away the best defensive player on the court as she finished with a match-high 29 digs. The two-time PacWest Libero of the Year frustrated the DSU attack all day, holding the Red Storm to .150 hitting on the match including a sub-.100 percentage in the final three sets.
"Hannah is a competitor and a leader," said Terra. "She willingly took on a lesser individual role this year for the betterment of the team. She did a great job mentoring the younger players on the back line while continuing to show why she's the top libero in the conference."
Carley Bock added 15 kills to conclude an excellent freshman year.
Gabriela Macedo turned in another strong all-around performance, finishing with 10 kills and 20 digs.
Bissie DenHartog dished out 48 assists to go with 16 digs, four kills and a match-high three service aces.Â
Madison Pierce and
Montana Lowe came up big in the blocking game, finishing with five apiece.
Chelsea Speaks and
Sarah McCann contributed to the defensive effort by adding 14 digs apiece.
DSU got 12 kills from Delayne Daniel in the loss. The Red Storm, who had already clinched the PacWest title and an NCAA tournament bid, dropped to 19-10, 15-5 in PacWest play.
With the win, FPU was able to extend a program streak of 32 consecutive seasons with a winning record.
