RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Fresno Pacific swept a pair of matches on the opening day of the Lancer Invite on Friday, as the Sunbirds defeated Cal Lutheran, 15-7, and La Verne, 15-11.
Kyle Madel led FPU with seven goals on the day.
The Sunbirds have won four straight and sit at 7-7 overall.
"I'm really happy with how we played today," said head coach
Bryan Suhovy. "We opened with the right mentality against Cal Lutheran and came out aggressive. We moved the ball well and played smart. I was really pleased with our defensive effort in the second game and thought it was our best defensive game of the season. It led to several counter attacks that we were able to take advantage of to earn the win. It was a full team effort today."
In the opener, the Sunbirds jumped out to a 7-2 lead and never looked back. FPU led 8-4 at halftime and closed the game on a 5-0 run to earn the 15-7 win.
Madel led the Sunbirds with four goals, while
Daniel Seymour and
David Maes tallied a hat trick.
Zlatko Vlasic and
Jeff Miller poured in two goals each and
Blake Lewis rounded out the scoring with a goal.
Dillon Robinson tallied 14 saves in the win to head the defense for FPU.
In the nightcap, the Sunbirds used a 3-1 second quarter to earn a 6-4 advantage over La Verne at the intermission. FPU then exploded for seven goals in the third period to take control of the match and eventually earn the 15-11 win.
Maes paced the Sunbirds' offense with four goals, while Vlasic and Seymour tallied three goals apiece. Madel found the back of the cage twice and
Connor Cookingham,
Erik Brown and
Kyle Eoff rounded out the scoring with a goal each.
Lewis had seven saves to lead the Sunbirds defensively.
FPU is back in action at the Lancer Invite tomorrow with two games against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (10:20 a.m.) and Whittier (1 p.m.)
