Sunbirds make statement with 1-0 win over 1st-place Eagles

Fresno Pacific picked up its biggest win of the season and one of the biggest wins in program history, knocking off first-place Concordia 1-0 on Saturday. It was the first win over Concordia in program history as the Sunbirds were 0-10-1 in 11 previous meetings.

Coming into the match, Concordia controlled its own destiny in the PacWest title hunt at 8-1-1 in conference play. However an aggressive Sunbird defense stifled the Eagles all night, as FPU recorded its seventh shutout of the season. Sassy Weigant headed in the game's lone goal off a corner kick from Amber Rodriguez in the 53rd.

"I think that's the best we've played all season," said head coach Rob Podeyn. "We were very dynamic, very creative and we generated a lot of chances. Defensively we did very well and stayed organized. Tonight showed our team that we really do have the ability to play with and beat the top teams in the conference. This was a very important game for Concordia as they fight for the conference title, but it was also very important to us to show that we can play against these teams and that we're a legitimate threat in this conference now."

The Sunbirds (9-5-2, 7-3-2 PacWest) controlled the midfield, the majority of possession and created more chances as they out-shot the Eagles 21-10 overall and 12-2 in shots on goal.

CUI goalkeeper Darby Clements kept the Eagles in the match, making 11 saves. CUI dropped to 9-3-3, 8-2-1 in PacWest play.

The Sunbirds conclude the season next Saturday when they host Dixie State at 5 pm. FPU will be going for its 10th win of the season, which would tie a program record. It will also be senior night as the program celebrates its graduating seniors.
