DAVIS, Calif. – Fresno Pacific jumped back into Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) play on Friday, as the Sunbirds fell to #10 UC Davis, 21-7, at Schaal Aquatics Center. FPU battled early, but couldn't keep up with the depth of the first-place Aggies in the end.
FPU falls to 9-14 overall and 1-3 in WWPA play with the loss, while UC Davis improves to 15-7, 4-0.
"We started off really strong with a solid first quarter, and fought hard the entire game," said head coach
Bryan Suhovy. "We just couldn't keep up with their depth, as they were subbing six-for-six every time. I'm proud of the men and their determination. Kevin (Richey) really stepped up defensively for us and had a great night in the cage."Â
After going down 1-0 early in the opening period,
Daniel Seymour and
Zlatko Vlasic scored back-to-back goals to put FPU up 2-1. After the Aggies responded up two goals of their own, the Sunbirds tied the game at 3-3 with 1:04 remaining in the period. UCD scored the last goal of the quarter to lead 4-3 after one.
The Aggies took control in the second period and used a 9-0 run to put the game out of reach. FPU trailed 10-3 at the half.
Seymour led FPU with a hat trick and an assist.
Erik Brown, Vlasic,
Kyle Madel and
Kyle Eoff rounded out the scoring with one goal apiece. Brown added three assists.
Kevin Richey played all four periods in the cage and amassed a season-high 15 saves.
Steven Kaufmann tallied two steals defensively.
FPU is back in action at home next Saturday, Nov. 6 against Air Force at 7 p.m.
