After a tough loss on Thursday, Fresno Pacific bounced back with a 3-1 win over conference rival Point Loma on Saturday. The Sea Lions (7-6, 2-3 PacWest), who had been nationally ranked until this week, took the first set 25-15, holding FPU to an .057 attack percentage but the Sunbirds (2-8, 2-3 PacWest) came alive in the final three sets.
After edging out PLNU 26-24 in set two, the Sunbirds proceeded to take control of sets three and four, hitting a sizzling .483 in the final frame.
Gabriela Macedo led the Sunbirds with 18 kills and added 12 digs.
Sarah McCann (12 kills, 13 digs, 6 blocks) and
Bissie DenHartog (48 assists, 21 digs) also had double-doubles in the win.
Hannah Butler finished with 21 digs, with
Chelsea Speaks adding 13 off the bench.
Carley Bock provided a spark off the bench as well, hitting .345 with 10 kills.
Madison Pierce had a team-high seven blocks.
"Coming off a match where we really felt we played well and should have won, we concentrated on finishing this week," said head coach
Matt Terra. "We knew Point Loma was coming in with a fast-paced offense and after the first set loss we began to make adjustments. Our block was key to slowing them down and allowed our defense to get to balls. Hannah played well and Chelsea was my MVP in slowing down a lot of attacks. Our defense set up the offense on counter opportunities and our outsides did a good job of finishing off plays. Carley came off the bench and played really well. We have shown our ability to play with some of the top teams in the conference and tonight we finally put together a full game and played to our potential. We still have a lot of work to do and are excited for the upcoming week in the Bay Area."
Heather Levitt led the Sea Lions with 19 kills and 18 digs.
The turning point came in set two when the Sea Lions had battled back from a 23-21 deficit to have set point at 24-23, but the Sunbirds forced back to back errors to take a 25-24 lead before Bock hammered home the set-winning kill. The Sunbirds were able to use that momentum to jump out to big leads in sets three and four.
The Sunbirds are back in action next Friday, taking on Holy Names in Oakland.
