FPU downs CBU, 3-1, to stay atop PacWest standings

FRESNO, Calif. - Renato Bustamante, Jorge Chedraui and Alvaro Nogales each scored for Fresno Pacific as the Sunbirds defeated conference rival California Baptist, 3-1, on Saturday night at Ramirez Field.

FPU improves to 11-2-2 overall and 8-1-1 in the PacWest with the win. The Sunbirds increase their lead in the PacWest by three points over Dixie State with three games remaining. CBU moves to 5-7-2 overall and 4-4-1 in league play.

"We were able to do some very good things against a very solid team in California Baptist tonight," said head coach Jaime Ramirez. "We knew we had to bring in a good level of energy in the first 15 minutes of the game, and we did just that. We played our game tonight.  I'm very proud of our effort."

The Sunbirds wasted no time in attacking the Lancers and fired eight shots, four coming on goal, and created six corner kick opportunities in the opening 12 minutes of action.

Bustamante finally found the back of the net in the 13th minute for a 1-0 lead that would stand through halftime. His seventh goal of the season was a header that was assisted from Nogales.

After the break, Chedraui scored his league-high 11th goal of the year in the 62nd minute and Nogales converted a penalty kick after a CBU handball in the box four minutes later. Benjamin Cowdrill and Dylan Rusconi assisted on Chedraui's score.

The Sunbirds played the last 22 minutes a man down, surrendering a goal in the 87th minute.

Andrew Luis was a wall in goal for FPU and provided six saves in the win.

CBU received its goal from Aidan Apodaca, while goalkeeper Noah Oyler made five saves in goal.

The Sunbirds continue its quest for the PacWest title on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at Holy Names.
