SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Fresno Pacific suffered a pair of setbacks on Saturday, as the Sunbirds fell to #17 St. Francis Brooklyn, 12-11, and #19 Harvard, 13-9, at the opening day of the Rodeo Tournament.
FPU falls to 9-11 overall with the pair of defeats.
"In the opener we went down by four early and fought back in it, which I was very proud of our guys for," said head coach
Bryan Suhovy. "Our power play percentage really hurt us and is something we will continue to work on."
The Sunbird trailed 9-5 at the half and used a solid third quarter to cut the Terriers' lead to 11-9 as the fourth period approached. FPU went down by one with 1:09 remaining and had a power-play opportunity to tie the game with 30 seconds remaining, but couldn't find the equalizer before time expired.
Daniel Seymour and
Zlatko Vlasic led the Sunbirds with three goals apiece, while
Kyle Madel and
David Maes each found the back of the cage twice.
Connor Cookingham rounded out the scoring with a goal.
In the nightcap, the Sunbirds trailed Harvard 6-5 at the intermission and fought hard into the third quarter. The Crimson ran away with the win with seven second-half goals.
Seymour, Maes and Vlasic led FPU with two goals apeice, while
Greg Bracamonte,
Kyle Eoff and Madel rounded out the scoring with a goal each.
"Harvard had very solid shooters and transitioned really well," said Suhovy. "We fought hard and continued to battle the entire match. It was a good showing overall for us on the day against very strong competition."
The Sunbirds continue action at the Rodeo Tournament tomorrow against #11 Brown and #14 Bucknell.
