Comeback falls short as Sunbirds stumble at Chaminade

HONOLULU - Fresno Pacific came back from a 16-point second half deficit to get within one point of Chaminade in the final minute but the Sunbirds missed a three-pointer as the final horn sounded to fall 67-65.

The Sunbirds (2-9, 2-4 PacWest) dug themselves an early hole, falling behind 15-2, but would close the first half on a 10-2 run to close the gap to 32-27 at half. In the second half, Chaminade led 55-39 with just over 10 minutes to play but the Sunbirds outscored CUH 25-11 over the next 10 minutes to make it a one-possession game. Charde Stevens knocked down two free-throws to bring the team within one 66-65 with 23 seconds to play. The Silverswords made one of two free-throws and FPU's Dakota McLarnan would get a a look at a three-pointer on the final possession but it didn't fall, giving the Silverswords their first win of the season.

"I'm proud of the way we fought back and put ourselves in a position to win in the final minute," said head coach Lindsey Wilson. "We need to be able to harness that intensity and play with that kind of passion for a full 40 minutes. You can't expect to win a game when you have 33 turnovers. We need to minimize the mental errors, continue to learn from our mistakes and prepare for a tough matchup on Saturday."

Stevens led FPU with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Megan Lee added a season-high 17 points. FPU's leading scorer on the season, point guard Jenay Herring, was out with an injury and the Sunbirds struggled to take care of the ball, turning the ball over a season-high 33 times as a team in the loss. That led to a 34-11 CUH advantage in points off turnovers.

The Silverswords (1-9, 1-5 PacWest) picked up their first win of the season behind 17 points from Katie Buskey.

FPU concludes its Hawaii trip on Saturday, facing a talented Hawaii Pacific team that comes in undefeated at 7-0 in PacWest play.
