Box Score Fresno Pacific picked up its first win of the year on Saturday night, knocking off Chaminade 2-0. The Sunbirds (1-5-1, 1-1-1 PacWest) set the tone early, scoring twice in the first 11 minutes, and controlled the majority of the possession throughout the match.
FPU got the scoring going less than three minutes into the match as
Hannah Coyle was taken down in the box, leading to a penalty kick goal by
Alyssa Nakaguchi, the first of her collegiate career. Nakaguchi then played a ball into the box that found its way into the net after a scrum around the goal. With a number of players fighting for the ball it was
Ana Walker that emerged with the goal, giving the team a 2-0 lead in the 11th minute.
FPU held the Silverswords (2-4, 2-1 PacWest) scoreless the rest of the night en route to its first clean sheet of 2014.
Summer Hammond made three saves in goal for the shutout.
"I'm proud of the girls for their effort," said head coach
Erik Farfan. "We feel like we've been getting closer each match to getting a result that we can be proud of and happy with. Tactically we've been trying to figure out which system works best for the personnel we have. It's taken time and we feel like things are starting to come together."
The Sunbirds continue PacWest play on Thursday, Oct. 2 at home against Holy Names at 7:30 p.m.
