FRESNO, Calif. - Alvaro Nogales buried a free kick in the second overtime to lead Fresno Pacific past visiting Chaminade 2-1 on Saturday night. A game that featured two PacWest unbeaten squads and was tabbed the conference's game of the week lived up to the hype at Ramirez Field.
FPU improves to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the PacWest with the win, while the Silverswords fall to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in league action.
"You've got to give Chaminade credit, they are a revamped team from the last couple of years and they played with a lot of energy and made it difficult on us," said head coach
Jaime Ramirez. "We had several opportunities but today was one of those days that our shots were off."
The Sunbirds got a 30th minute goal from
Nick Watson, assisted by
Anthony Velarde, to make the score 1-0 at the intermission. It was Watson's second goal of the season, which marks a career-high.
Chaminade netted the equalizer as the second half began in the 50th minute from Nicolas Ferro.
The Sunbirds played a man up from the 72nd minute on after a CUH red card. FPU nearly found the go-ahead goal with 13 second-half shots, but Chaminade held FPU scoreless to force overtime.
Following the first overtime, Nogales nailed the game-winner following a takedown of
Renato Bustamante just outside of the box on a free kick. The junior managed to bend the ball around the CUH wall into the back of the net, just inside the post for the golden goal.
"Once the foul was called, I saw the hole in-between their guys," said Nogales. "I hit it and it was an amazing feeling. We know what it takes to win and sometimes games get rough like this. Everybody gave their heart the whole time and we used the fight in us to get the win."
FPU out-shot the Silverswords 34-8 in the victory, which included a 12-3 advantage with shots on goal. Chaminade drew eight corner kicks compared to FPU's five. The Sunbird defense frustrated the Silversword offense throughout the night and drew four offside calls.
Andrew Luis was credited with the win and made one save on the night. CUH's Bernd Buescherhoff amassed nine saves in the loss.
The Sunbirds continue PacWest play at home against Holy Name on Thursday, Oct. 2 at 5 p.m.
