Sunbirds get on the board, but can't catch up in 3-1 setback

Box Score

Despite finding the back of the net for the first time this season, Fresno Pacific couldn't keep pace with visiting San Francisco State on Tuesday as the Sunbirds fell 3-1 to drop to 0-4 on the season.

After falling behind 2-0, the team would show some life in the second half as sophomore Hannah Coyle, making her season debut, played a perfect cross to freshman Rachelle Schiller, who beat the charging SFSU keeper with a well-placed shot into the net. That made the score 2-1 in the 79th minute, but it wouldn't be long until the Gators responded as just four minutes later SFSU's Rachel Arce scored on a pass from Autumn Fox to make it 3-1.

Fox had two goals and an assist on the night for the Gators, scoring the first goal in the 12th minute and adding another in the 54th. SFSU led 1-0 at halftime and the Sunbirds caught a break just before half as the Gators missed a wide open shot in the box toward an empty net.

The Sunbirds were out-shot 14-12 overall and 8-2 in shots on goal. Both FPU goalkeepers saw action, with Vanessa Escobar finishing with three saves.

"We showed some promise in fighting back tonight from the two goal deficit with Rachelle's nicely converted one v. one goal," said head coach Erik Farfan. "Credit to her for a composed finish and to Hannah Coyle for a well played through ball. That being said, we need to continue to do a better job in terms of not digging ourselves into holes prior to us responding. We will simply go back to the drawing board through the rest of this week as we continue to prepare as best as we can for Saturday."

Despite a tough non-conference schedule, FPU now gets to wipe the slate clean as it heads into PacWest play this weekend. The Sunbirds travel to San Diego to face Point Loma on Saturday at 1:30 pm. The Sea Lions were picked third out of 13 teams in the PacWest preseason poll.
