Box Score Fresno Pacific welcomed NCAA Division I Sacramento State to town on Friday night, putting together a strong effort against a much bigger Hornets squad before surrendering two second-half goals to fall 2-0.
"We are really proud of our team for the effort they put forth tonight on the field against a DI level opponent in Sac State," said head coach
Erik Farfan. "Sure we are disappointed in the result itself, but this was a far better performance than our two previous matches and is a much better representation of the competitive level of this year's team. We showed a lot of spirit, determination and commitment in following through with the gameplan and simply need to minimize some key mistakes and maximize our chances on goal. Tonight's outcome could have been much different had we done that."
The Sunbirds (0-3) put together a quality defensive performance outside of a 50th minute goal by SSU's Shelby Salvacion and a 64th minute goal by Kristen Bridges. FPU had its chances on the offensive end, including a one-on-one breakaway situation in the first half by
Jenna Thomason that was snagged by the keeper.
Mariah Montoya created chances for the Sunbirds as well, using superior footwork and speed to get a couple of quality shots on goal.
The Hornets improved to 4-3 on the season with the victory.
FPU is back in action on Tuesday night, hosting San Francisco State at 7:30 pm.
