Box Score ST. GEORGE, Utah - Fresno Pacific spoiled Dixie State's senior day, pounding out 20 hits in a 15-9 rout of the PacWest champion Red Storm (35-15, 26-6 PacWest).
John Koretoff homered twice, going 4-for-5 with three RBI, and
Hunter Villanueva went 4-for-6 with a two-run blast. Villanueva's homer capped off a seven-run sixth inning that put the game away for the Sunbirds.
Joshua Banuelos went 3-for-5 with three RBI.
FPU starter
Eian Raeber struggled early on, but reliever
Tanner Irwin tossed five innings of one-run ball, striking out seven to earn the win.
"We met before the game and talked about what we needed to do," said head coach
Oscar Hirschkorn. "How we needed to play for each other and play as a team, and how we needed to be aggressive. We did all of that today and the result was that we played FPU baseball."
Every player in the Sunbird lineup got a hit and scored a run in the game. FPU scored three runs in the top of the second to take the lead before a three-run DSU homer tied it up in the bottom half. The team fought back in the next half inning though, scoring four runs to take the lead for good, powered by Koretoff's two-run blast.
The Sunbirds conclude the regular season with a 31-19 record, 19-13 in PacWest play. FPU now moves on to the NCCAA West Region playoffs, where the team is the #2 seed. The Sunbirds will play a best of three series at top-seeded Azusa Pacific beginning on Thursday.
