Salles tosses gem, but Sunbird bats go silent in 2-1 loss

Box Score

FRESNO, Calif. - J.D. Salles went eight strong innings but the Sunbird lineup was unable to back him up as FPU dropped a 2-1 non-conference game to Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday night.

The Sunbirds (14-11) were limited to just four hits on the night but had a chance to win it in the ninth with the go-ahead run at the plate. Michael Hostetler led off the inning with a single before Joshua Banuelos crushed a ball to left field, but the potential walk-off homer was caught at the warning track.

Salles struck out seven in eight innings but got the tough-luck loss to fall to 2-4 on the season despite his 1.98 ERA. The Otters (12-16) got five strong innings from Michael Isom in the win.

FPU scored its lone run in the eighth when Michael Tittle walked, stole second, went to third on a throwing error by the catcher and later scored on a wild pitch. Richie Johnson and Kaden Kamoe each had two hits for the Otters, who scored in the fifth and sixth innings.

The two teams meet up tomorrow for a doubleheader at CSUMB.
