Sunbirds can't hold early lead as win streak comes to an end

AZUSA, Calif. - Fresno Pacific couldn't hang on to a 3-0 lead as conference rival Azusa Pacific snapped the Sunbirds' seven-game winning streak with a 5-3 win one night after FPU snapped APU's eight-game win streak.

The Sunbirds (13-9, 5-5 PacWest) scored three runs in the third inning but were unable to get anything going otherwise, being held to just three hits on the day.

The Cougars (11-5, 7-1 PacWest), on the other hand, had 13 hits and finally broke through in the seventh inning to take the lead for good. J.D. Salles (2-3) took the loss for FPU, surrendering three earned runs in seven innings of work while striking out seven.

Baron Bower, Michael Tittle and McKay France collected hits for FPU. Joshua Banuelos delivered a sac fly that put the team up 3-0 in the third.

Jordan Brower went 3-for-3 with a homerun to lead the Cougars.

The two teams conclude the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 11 am.
