Box Score
San Francisco State had no answer for Fresno Pacific's
J.D. Salles, who tossed eight scoreless innings and struck out 11 to lead the Sunbirds to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Gators on Friday night in Fresno.
Salles (2-0), who was coming off a similar performance in a win against Cal State Stanislaus that earned him PacWest pitcher of the week honors, scattered five hits and only walked one batter in the win.
John Koretoff went 3-for-4 to lead the Sunbird lineup, while
Joshua Banuelos and
Baron Bower each finished 2-for-3 as FPU improved to 4-3 on the season.
The Gators (2-4) made things interesting in the ninth after Salles had exited, loading the bases with two outs. FPU turned to reliever
Michael Rodrigues, who walked in one run after a couple two-strike pitches very narrowly missed. The Sunbird righty kept his composure and got the next batter to hit a chopper up the middle that was snagged by second baseman
McKay France and flipped to shortstop
Michael Tittle for the final out, earning Rodrigues his first save of the season.
Preston Tarter turned in a quality start for SFSU, throwing eight innings without allowing an earned run. Both of FPU's runs came in the second inning, aided by a pair of Gator errors.
The two teams square off again tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at 11 am.
