Sunbirds knock off Point Loma for first time since '05

Fresno Pacific knocked off conference rival Point Loma for the first time since 2005, handing the Sea Lions a 73-59 defeat on Saturday night. Jenay Herring led a balanced scoring attack with 17 points and nine assists. Charde Stevens added 12 points and 13 rebounds, Dakota McLarnan scored 14 and Keairra White finished with 10 as the Sunbirds improved to 2-7, 2-2 in PacWest play.

"We took some huge steps today," said head coach Lindsey Wilson. "It's nice to be able to enjoy Christmas holiday coming off a win. The seniors did a great job today. Jenay found ways to make everyone around her better and passed the ball really well, Keairra was patient and efficient, and Charde did a great job all around and on the boards."

After leading 35-29 at the half, FPU jumped out on an 8-3 to lead 45-32. The Sunbirds maintained a 12-point lead with 11 minutes to go before a 10-2 Sea Lion run made it 54-50 with 6:53 to play. Strong guard play and good free-throw shooting helped the Sunbirds put the game away as FPU outscored PLNU 19-7 over the next five minutes.

FPU out-rebounded the Sea Lions 43-33 and forced 20 turnovers in the victory.

Jessica Escorza had 19 points in a losing effort for the Sea Lions (3-7, 1-2 PacWest). PLNU had won the previous 18 meetings between the two programs.

The Sunbirds return to action after the break on January 2, hosting former GSAC opponent (and future PacWest opponent) Concordia in an exhibition.
