Fresno Pacific defeated visiting BYU Hawaii 3-1 on senior night as
Hannah Coyle,
Jenna Thomason and
Bianka Garcia each scored goals to lead a well-balanced FPU attack in the victory. Thomason and
Amber Rodriguez recorded assists for the Sunbirds (6-6-2, 6-2-2 PacWest).
Coyle got the scoring going in the 14th minute after Thomason played the ball into the box to give her an open shot. Thomason added to the lead in the 24th minute after a BYUH turnover, getting the ball just inside the box and perfectly placing a chip shot over the keeper's head. The Sunbirds led 2-0 at the break but weren't done yet, as Garcia buried a deep, curving shot from outside the box after a good play by Rodriguez to give her some space.
The Seasiders (3-12, 2-8 PacWest) got a late goal from Rebekah McCarthy, but dropped their eighth consecutive match.
The Sunbirds took the opportunity to celebrate the careers of
Amanda Hudec and
Tori Sena, playing in their final home games.
"Amanda and Tori have meant so much to our program," said head coach
Erik Farfan. "Tori is someone I've coached since her high school years. Just to see her grow and mature has been great. She's been an outstanding student-athlete who's been quality on and off the field. She has the respect of her teammates and is a team leader that's shown a lot of versatility. She's a team player and a great example for our younger players."
"With Amanda, first off I'm just really impressed with her ability to finish her degree in three years," said Farfan. "She has as much academic tenacity as she does on the field. One of the reasons she's such an effective captain is her organizational skills. She's another player that's shown great versatility for us."
FPU now travels to Azusa Pacific to take on an APU team that the Sunbirds have yet to defeat in the program's history. The two teams square off next Thursday night, November 6, at 8 pm.
