FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno Pacific fell in double overtime to Hawaii Pacific 2-1 Saturday in PacWest action at Ramirez Field.
"I give HPU a lot of credit, I was impressed with their ability one-on-one to break our pressure," said head coach
Jaime Ramirez. "The outcome is difficult to swallow sometimes when you know you're right there and that close. Nevertheless, we still are in charge of our own destiny if we win out."
FPU falls out of first place with the loss at 7-2 in conference play and 21 points overall. The Sunbirds (9-4) are currently one point ahead of BYU-Hawaii in third place and trail first-place Azusa Pacific by three points with three games remaining. FPU still faces both teams this season.
After a quiet first half, HPU opened the second period with a goal in the 46th minute from Nahoa Salera to take a 1-0 lead. The Sunbirds found the equalizer in the 62nd minute from
Alvaro Nogales, who received a touch pass from
Jorge Chedraui just outside of the box to fire home a shot into the back of the net.
FPU had two opportunities late to take the lead, both on runs from
Joey Belzil, but shots fell just wide to move the game into overtime.
The golden goal came in the second overtime period from Daniel Haehre in the 101st minute from about 35 yards out.
Andrew Luis made seven saves in the loss for FPU.
"I was happy with our ability to show resilience tonight by climbing back into the game and putting ourselves in position to win it," said Ramirez. "Our heart and our fight is there. We still have some things we have to take care of, especially with the quick turnaround on Monday. Hopefully we can learn from this experience and bounce back and get those three points."
The Sunbirds will celebrate Senior Day on Monday, Oct. 27 at 5:00 p.m. against BYU-Hawaii at Ramirez Field. Â
