Box Score A 20-point outburst by
Jenay Herring powered the Sunbirds to their first three-game winning streak of the season pulling out a 66-58 win over Hawaii Hilo.
"This is such huge progress for our program and where we are trying to go," said head coach
Lindsey Wilson. "I am so proud of our team right now. We had a big win over Hawaii Pacific and we were able to come back on short rest and get another victory tonight."
Herring's 20 points were a season-high for the junior guard, and were followed by 16 points from
Patrice Saindon and a season-high tying 12 points from
Keairra White. FPU (6-11, 6-5 PacWest) shot over 40-percent for the third straight game and did so against the conferences third-best field goal percentage defense in Hawaii Hilo (6-9, 5-6 PacWest).
"We have to give all the credit to our players," said Wilson. "They have been buying in to what we are doing here, and have been willing to listen, to learn, and to do all the things we are asking. That is why we are having success."
The Vulcans got 18 from McKenzie Mangino and a double-double from Kamie Imai of 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Vulcans were stymied offensively by a tenacious FPU defense that allowed UHH to shoot just 37-percent from the floor and 18 turnovers. The Vulcans had averaged just 15.6 turnovers the second lowest turnovers per game in the conference.
Hawaii Hilo got off to a quick start putting the Sunbirds down six just over six minutes into the game. A lackadaisical offensive start, in which they started just 3-of-9 from the field, put the Sunbirds down early. FPU briefly took the lead before UHH pushed their lead back out to seven. The Sunbirds cut the lead to three at the half and nearly tied it on a shot from the opponent's free throw line that clanked off the back iron.
Imai paced a balanced offensive attack for the Vulcans with seven points in the first half. White and Herring each poured in eight for the Sunbirds.
Out of the break FPU allowed Hilo to jump race back out to a seven-point lead before the Sunbirds pushed back with a 13-4 run of their own to reclaim the lead at 44-42. After jostling for position throughout the rest of the half Herring closed the door with 2:32 remaining hitting a pair of free throws that put the Sunbirds up for good. Fresno Pacific outscored the Vulcans by 11 in the half and cushioned their lead with a perfect shooting performance from the line in the final minute (6-6).
The win locks the Sunbirds into a three-way tie for fourth place in the conference with Cal Baptist and Dixie State. FPU will travel to Notre Dame de Namur on January 30 to try and close the month out with a winning record. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
