Sunbirds edged by winless BYU Hawaii

Box Score

A rash of late misses completed a second half collapse by Fresno Pacific who fell 55-54 to winless BYU Hawaii, and dropped their third straight game.

The Sunbirds struggled to find a rhythm offensively shooting just 35.7-percent from the field after a 28.6-percent performance in the second half. Charde Stevens led the way for the Sunbirds with her fifth double double of the year of 11 points and 11 rebounds. Sienna Gonzales finished with nine on 3-of-5 shooting behind the arc.

"It comes down to our effort, we got outplayed for 40 minutes today," said head coach Lindsey Wilson. "They wanted it more than we did at the end of the day, and that is what it came down to; they wanted it more."

BYU Hawaii overcame a dismal first half performance in which they shot just 18.5-percent from the floor on 5-of-27 shooting. The Seasiders got ten points from three players in their first win of the season.

Both teams struggled in the first half combining for just seven points in the first five minutes of the game. The Sunbirds continued to stifle the BYU Hawaii offense outrebounding the Seasiders and forcing 12 first-half turnovers. Fresno Pacific led by as many as 14 with 9:14 remaining in the game at 45-31. BYUH went on to out score the Sunbirds 24-9 over that final stretch.

FPU missed three layup chances in the final 46 seconds that would have won the game.

The Sunbirds will take the floor on Monday to try and snap their three-game losing streak when they face Chaminade at 5:30 p.m. in the FPU Events Center.
