Seaside, Calif. - FPU goalie Sarah King made 12 saves and the Sunbird defense withstood a barrage of shots, but FPU couldn't get anything going offensively in a 1-0 loss at Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday.
The Sunbirds (1-1) managed just one shot against a tough Otter team picked to finish high in the CCAA standings. FPU was out-shot 25-1 on the day and 13-0 in shots on goal.
"We didn't play to our potential at all," said head coach Erik Farfan. "Credit to Monterey Bay, they came out determined and passionate about the game and they're a great team. We're going to take this and learn from it. We're going to go back to the drawing board in some ways, but I have a lot of confidence in the abiltiy of this team and I think we'll be ready for our next challenge."
CSUMB's Natalie Argueta scored the game's lone goal in the 16th minute on an assist from Hannah Cobb. FPU's only legitimate chance to tie it came early in the second half on a play by Kelly Nikkel.
"It was a difficult field to play on and the spongy surface wasn't conducive to our style of play," said Farfan. "But we have to learn to adjust to these kinds of things and be ready to play at a lot of different venues this season."
The Sunbirds face another tough task in theri next game on Wednesday when they play at NCAA Division I Sacramento State.
