Three days after stunning two-time defending league champion California Baptist 1-0, Fresno Pacific picked up its second straight PacWest shutout victory, defeating Dominican 1-0.
The Sunbirds (3-3, 2-1 PacWest) got another phenomenal defensive performance from their backline led by Caressa Archie, Alyssa Nakaguchi and Clara Buettner. Vanessa Escobar posted a shutout with five saves in goal in her first start as a Sunbird after regular starter Sarah King sat out due to injury.
FPU's lone goal came in the 41st minute when Amber Rodriguez made an outstanding run down the left side of the field shaking off three defenders with great speed and dribbling ability. She delivered a perfect pass to Jay Valtierra in the box, who buried the shot past All-PacWest goalkeeper Megan Herring for the goal. It was Valtierra's first game of the season after returning from injury.
The Sunbirds did a great job of keeping the pressure up in the second half and creating attack chances while also playing steady defense.
"We're very proud of our team for another strong defensive effort and for posting the shutout," said head coach Erik Farfan afterward. "Again, our backline and midfield were solid as was Vanessa Escobar who saw her first minutes of the year. It was also great to see Joanna Valtierra come back strong from injury and have an immediate impact upon entering today's match with the game winning goal. Although we will continue to work on creating more chances and scoring more goals, it is vital that we are able to win tight 1-0 matches throughout the course of the season as we have done in our last two games."
The Penguins fall to 2-4-2, 0-2-1 in PacWest play.
FPU plays at UC Santa Cruz on Tuesday at 2 pm before returning home to host Notre Dame de Namur at 4:30 pm on Saturday.
