Fresno Pacific rallied for three runs with two outs in the seventh inning to pick up a doubleheader sweep of Holy Names (14-33, 10-24 PacWest) on Thursday, winning 11-1 in game one before escaping with a 4-3 win in game two. With FPU (29-19, 20-14 PacWest) moving up to number three in the latest NCCAA national poll, the two wins today put the Sunbirds in the drivers seat to make the regional playoff tournament next week.
Steven Moon delivered a huge day with six hits and five RBI to lead Fresno Pacific, who totaled 24 hits on the day.
FPU jumped out to a quick lead early in game one, with
Bobby Mendoza delivering an RBI single with the bases loaded in the second before
Matt Fox blasted a solo home run in the third to put the Sunbirds up 2-0 after three innings.
After going up 3-1,
Brett Bishop ripped an RBI triple and was singled in by
Kaohu Gaspar before Moon finished off the scoring in the fifth with an RBI single to go ahead 6-1.
Moon delivered three of the final five runs with a two RBI double in the seventh and a two RBI single in the eighth to lead Fresno Pacific to an 11-1 win.
J.D. Salles bounced back from his loss last week with seven strong innings and six strikeouts to earn his sixth win of the year.
Anthony Cantu threw two scoreless innings in relief to finish off the victory.
FPU exploded for 17 hits on offense, led by four hits from Moon, three hits apiece from Fox and
Kyle Coppom and two hits apiece from Gaspar and Bishop. Fox scored three runs while Gaspar crossed the plate four times for FPU.
In game two, Fresno Pacific jumped out to a 1-0 lead after a Bishop solo shot in the third and held the lead until the bottom of the sixth.
After starter
Ryan Castadio escaped trouble earlier in the game, Holy Names managed to plate two runs with RBI from Ryan Souza and pinch hitter Hunter Dodson to gain the lead 2-1 heading into the seventh.
With the Sunbirds down to its final out, Moon delivered a game tying RBI to score Bishop before
John Koretoff provided the two RBI game wining hit to score Gaspar and Moon to put FPU up 4-2.
Holy Names would not go down without a fight, scoring a run in the final frame before
Chris De La Torre came in relief of
Ryan Cheek to pick up the save in the 4-3 win. Cheek picked up the win for FPU.
Fresno Pacific and Holy Names finish off the four game series tomorrow with game one starting at 11:00 a.m.
