Game 1 - Grand Canyon 5, Fresno Pacific 0 (7 innings)
Game 2 - Fresno Pacific 7, Grand Canyon 6 (7 innings)
Steven Lozier hit a walk-off two-RBI single in the bottom of the seventh as Fresno Pacific (21-13, 12-8 PacWest) salvaged a doubleheader split with first-place #14-ranked Grand Canyon (29-6, 22-2 PacWest), snapping the Antelopes' 20-game winning streak in the process.
The Sunbirds trailed 6-5 heading into the bottom half of the inning.
Matt Fox delivered a leadoff single and was pinch-run for by
Baron Bower, who advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a wild pitch.
Pinch-hitter
Robert Chambas drew a walk and was pinch-run for by
Zak Taylor.
Kenny Overly then drew a walk as well to load the bases with one out. Lozier delivered the game-winning hit by lining a 1-1 pitch into left field scoring both Bower and Taylor as the Sunbird dugout emptied in celebration.
"This is a special group of guys," said Fox afterward. "We've been down quite a bit this year but I feel like we've always found a way to come back whether it's just hitting the ball or taking team at-bats. We have a group of guys that's willing to do whatever they need to get on base for the team. It's fun to play for that kind of team."
Head coach
Oscar Hirschkorn talked afterward about the resiliency of the team, which came back from deficits multiple times in the series and finally broke through in the last game.
"We always seem to find a way to make a push. That shows a lot about their character and their willingness to continue and not just give up after a bad inning," said Hirschkorn. "There were great at-bats in there, Lozier obviously came up with that big hit but there were quite a few guys that took great at-bats, starting with
Matt Fox."
"He's really done well for us in the last two weeks, just grinding out at-bats and just being a really tough guy to pitch to," said Hirschkorn about Fox. "He does everything, he'll wear it, he'll bunt, he'll hit the fastball, hit the breaking ball, he's done it all and he's been a great example to our team."
Lozier finished 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. The heart of FPU's order made heavy contributions to the win as
Brett Bishop went 4-for-4 with two runs,
Kyle Coppom finished 3-for-3 with two RBI and
Kaohu Gaspar was 2-for-2 with an RBI and two walks.
Mitchell Scott (3-4) earned the win, throwing four innings out of the bullpen for FPU.
James Lagorio started the game and threw well for three innings, striking out four and not allowing a hit before running into command issues in the fourth, a five-run inning for GCU that erased a 3-0 FPU lead.
GCU's Brandon Smith was 2-for-4 with a homerun in the loss. Reliever Mark Jarrett suffered the loss and the blown save.
In game one, GCU's Coley Bruns (7-0) took a no-hitter into the seventh inning when Lozier broke it up with a single.
Ryan Castadio (2-3) took the loss for the Sunbirds, giving up three runs in 5 2/3 innings.
FPU hits the road next weekend for a four-game series in San Diego against Point Loma (17-19, 13-11 PacWest).
