SAN DIEGO - Fresno Pacific was not able to overcome a huge day from Point Loma's Bryan Burkhead, who totaled three home runs and six RBI, dropping both games in San Diego 7-3 and 4-3. The Sunbirds (21-17, 12-12 PacWest) have now lost 12 straight at Point Loma (21-20, 17-11 PacWest) dating back to 2009 after the four-game sweep.
FPU left 19 runners on base in the two games and has now lost seven of the last eight contests.
Burkhead delivered a two home run, four RBI performance to lead Point Loma 7-3 over FPU in game one. Justin Lawrence, who struck out 15 Sunbirds in a start last season, delivered seven scoreless innings with six strikeouts to pick up his fourth win of the season.
Following the top of the second, an inning the Sunbirds stranded
Robert Chambas at third after grounding into a double-play, Point Loma jumped on the scoreboard first and never looked back.
The Sea Lions manufactured three runs in the next half following a leadoff walk, two hits and a throwing error by
Wilson Ashford to go up 3-0.
Point Loma added to the lead in the third with Burkhead's two-out three run home run for a commanding 6-0 lead.
Burkhead wasn't finished, blasting his second home run of the day in the seventh for his fourth RBI of the game to put the score at 7-0.
The Sunbirds would tack on three runs in the final two frames, with Chambas and
Matt Fox drawing bases loaded walks in the eighth and
Brett Bishop singling home
Baron Bower to make the final 7-3.
Ashford (5-2) picked up the loss for FPU, throwing six innings, giving up seven runs and striking out six.
In game two, the Sunbirds jumped out to a quick lead before another Burkhead homer led the Sea Lions to a 4-3 victory.
The Sunbirds seemed in control of the game early, fueled by two RBI from Bishop. A solo home run in the first and an RBI double in the third had FPU in the driver's seat up 2-0.
The lead was short-lived as PLNU responded the next half inning after a double and an error tied the game at two. Burkhead followed with his third home run of the day, a two-run blast to put the Sea Lions up for good 4-2.
Fresno Pacific pulled within one in the sixth, scoring
Matt Fox on a
Steven Moon groundout but would leave bases loaded after a pop up to third ended the threat. FPU put the tying run on in the final frame but would end the game on another pop up as the team totaled nine runner left on base in the game.
James Lagorio (1-1) picked up the loss for the Sunbirds, giving up four runs and striking out four in 4.2 innings.
The Sunbirds will look to get back on the track next week, hosting Dixie State in a four game series next Friday and Saturday, starting at 4 p.m. on Friday.
