SAN DIEGO - Fresno Pacific received two quality starts on the mound, but saw its bats silenced on Friday, totaling just three hits while suffering a doubleheader sweep at the hands of PacWest rival Point Loma. The Sunbirds (21-15, 12-10 PacWest) gave up three runs in the eighth inning of game one to fall 4-1 and were no-hit in the seven-inning game two to fall 2-0, despite putting seven runners on base (5 walks, 2 HBP) and loading the bases in the final inning.
Sam Sadler and Garrett Levsen combined on the no-hitter for the Sea Lions, who improved to 19-20, 15-11 in PacWest play. Levsen earned the save in both games.
Game one featured two of the top starting pitchers in the PacWest in FPU's J.D. Salles and PLNU's Tyler Garkow, who both featured an ERA under 2.50 and were tied for the league lead in innings pitched at 72.
Both starters fit the bill after some early trouble, combining for 14.2 innings, three earned runs, six hits and 17 strikeouts in the 4-1 loss for the Sunbirds.
FPU was able to scratch across a run in the third to jump on the board first after Baron Bower was hit by a pitch, stole second, advanced to third on a balk and scored on an RBI groundout by Brett Bishop.
The lead was short-lived however, as the Sea Lions pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth following a walk and an error to tie the game at 1-1.
The game remained tied until the eighth, as PLNU escaped a jam stranding Bower on third before using the momentum to score three runs in the following half inning. After two walks, an RBI double by Tyler Nordgren forced Salles out of the game leading to the Sea Lions scoring two more runs off Chris De La Torre to take a commanding 4-1 lead.
Levsen closed out the win for Point Loma, working a quick ninth with three strikeouts.
Salles (4-4) picked up the loss, despite throwing 7.2 innings, giving up three hits and recording 10 strikeouts while Bower finished 2-for-2 with a run scored and a stolen base for FPU.
Ryan Castadio was on the mound for the Sunbirds in game two, picking up the tough luck loss after throwing a complete game and allowing two earned runs. Point Loma capitalized on a wild pitch and an RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the fourth to go up 2-0.
The Sunbirds had a prime opportunity to jump back into the game in the final frame as Robert Chambas walked, Matt Fox was hit by a pitch and John Koretoff drew a walk to load the bases and put the tying run on second. With two outs however, Levsen got pinch-hitter Devin Lee to pop up to the shortstop to end it.
It was the first time in FPU baseball history that the program had been no-hit. The Sunbirds came within three outs of being no-hit by #9 Grand Canyon last week in another seven-inning game, before
Steven Lozier broke it up with a single.
The two teams meet up again tomorrow at noon for a doubleheader to complete the four-game series.
