Lancers sour Senior Day for FPU

Box Score Fresno Pacific dropped their final game of the season on senior day 81-54 to the PacWest's first place team California Baptist after the Lancers used an 18-1 run to close the first half.

"The message going through tonight was we can play with anybody," said head coach Erin Scholz. "We hung in the game aside from a three or four minute stretch when they went on a huge run."

Charde Stevens led the Sunbirds in scoring with 14 points on 5-9, her best shooting performance this season. Seniors Callie Kloubec and Kayla Clement chipped in 10 and eight points respectively in their final game as Sunbirds.

"Kayla's enthusiasm has been unwavering and her commitment has been consistent," said Scholz. "I was really happy for Callie, that she was able to really bloom late in the season and she got to see a lot more of the court. I know that is where she longed to be."

The Lancers got 20 points from Myriah Hicks to lead all scorers. Simone Holmes scored 17 and Amy Browne chipped in 12 for the PacWest leaders.

CBU jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead on the Sunbirds before FPU answered with a 6-2 run of their own to pull within four. The game bounced back and forth until the 6:02 mark of the first half when the Lancers started their run.

Fresno Pacific made several small runs in the second half, but the Sunbirds were unable to climb back into the game.

"We were a team this year that has played our best basketball and we played our worst basketball," said Scholz. "I was encouraged by the way we played tonight."

The loss caps off a disappointing season for FPU who finished 4-21, 4-14 in the PacWest. The Sunbirds pulled off one of the bigger upsets in the conference season when they shocked the then No. 2 place team Hawaii Pacific 73-72. The win came in the midst of a four game win streak that propelled the Sunbirds out of last place in their first season in the PacWest.
