Azusa, Calif. - Fresno Pacific's pitching has been in top form all season and on Saturday it was the Sunbird lineup's turn to shine. FPU pounded out 26 hits over two games to defeat conference rival Azusa Pacific by scores of 12-1 and 6-4 as the Sunbirds improved to 5-1 in conference play, 10-5 overall.
The Sunbirds, who had hit just one homerun on the season heading into the day, belted three homers on the day.
Bobby Mendoza and
Baron Bower each blasted three-run homeruns in game one, while
Steven Moon added a two-run shot in game two.
"We were much better today with our offensive approach," said head coach
Oscar Hirschkorn. "I liked how our team played the game today. They were fun to watch. Now we need to carry that into next week and the rest of the season as it progresses."
J.D. Salles went eight innings on the mound without allowing an earned run, giving up just four hits and striking out five, to earn the win in game one.
Josh Medeles earned the win in game two, throwing four innings, and
Ryan Castadio picked up a three-inning save.
"Salles was very good today," said Hirschkorn. "Medeles didn't have his best stuff but he pitched well. Castadio gave us some very good innings out of the pen and got us that win in game two."
Steven Lozier,
Brett Bishop and
Kyle Coppom each had four hits on the day, while Bower and
John Koretoff each added three.
The Sunbirds host APU this Saturday for a doubleheader in Fresno at 11 am.
