Errors prove costly once again at CBU

Box Score

Riverside, Calif. - After committing four errors in yesterday's extra-inning loss, Fresno Pacific committed three more on Friday, falling 4-1 at California Baptist despite a quality outing by J.D. Salles.

Salles went 7 2/3 innings with just one of his four runs given up being earned. He would strike out five and walk two, but take the loss.

FPU (11-8, 6-4 PacWest) had no answer for Lancer starter David Herd, who wasn't overpowering but mixed speeds well and kept the Sunbird hitters off balance for a complete game despite just two strikeouts. Kaohu Gaspar went 2-for-3, but FPU had no extra-base hits on the day.

The Lancers (13-7, 6-0 PacWest) got two hits and a solo homerun from Zach Esquerra to remain perfect in PacWest play.

CBU got on the board after an FPU error in the first inning but the Sunbirds would tie it up in the third after Steven Moon and Devin Lee singled, leading to an RBI groundout by Steven Lozier.  Esquerra's homerun came in the bottom half of the inning as CBU regained the lead.

FPU remained within striking distance throughout the game, but another error in the bottom of the eighth proved costly after a dropped fly ball on what would have been the third out. CBU proceeded to score two more runs in the inning and that would be the final, 4-1.

The two teams meet up again tomorrow for a doubleheader as the Sunbirds look to even up the series.
